Johnston County was created in 1746 from Craven County and named in honor of Gabriel Johnston, North Carolina's royal governor at the time. Governor Johnston was responsible for the settlement of many Highland Scots in the Cape Fear Region. Gov. Johnston was of Scottish descent, according to sources, he was a low land Scot. Johnston County originally contained most of what is now Wake, Wayne, Greene, and Lenoir counties and part of Wilson County.
How Laurinburg, NC got its name:
The City of Laurinburg, named as the county seat at the county's creation, draws its name from the prominent McLaurin family. Laurinburg and the county's other towns of Laurel Hill, Gibson, Wagram, and part of Maxton concentrate the population in the southern half of Scotland County
How Raeford got its name:
History. John McRae and A.A. Williford operated a turpentine distillery and general store, respectively. Each took a syllable from his name and came up with the name Raeford for the post office they established.
